The sun continuously emits charged particles in the form of what is called the solar wind in all directions. When these charged particles encounter the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth%27s_magnetic_field\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth&#8217;s magnetic field<\/a>, they are directed toward the poles. There, they enter the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms.<\/p><p class=\"my-0\">These collisions cause the atoms in the atmosphere to become excited and move to a higher energy state.
